Possible strategies
The four teams involved still have all to play for. After the two first-leg draws last week, the teams playing at home will be favourites to progress, but both Barcelona and Liverpool have demonstrated that they have the potential to go all the way. Before making your predictions, think back to last week’s games and consider the most likely scenarios this week. Also look at how the four teams performed at the weekend.
Away challenge
On Tuesday, Barcelona must do something that none of the eleven previous visitors to Old Trafford have managed in the competition and avoid defeat. That is a sizeable task against a side who have conceded just one goal in five home games. Coach Frank Rijkaard’s men, however, will also know that a score draw would be enough to take them through, and only once in this season’s competition have they failed to find the net on their travels.
Goals needed
On Wednesday, Liverpool must do something they have failed to manage in eight previous attempts under Rafael Benítez: score a goal at Stamford Bridge. To progress to an eighth European Champion Clubs’ Cup final without recourse to penalties, Liverpool must either win or earn a high-scoring draw of 2-2 or more.
Chelsea victory
Although United and Chelsea will be looking to make the most of home advantage, Barcelona and Liverpool know that the showdown between these two teams at Stamford Bridge on Saturday will have given them little time to recover from last week’s first-leg games. Chelsea’s 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, which puts the London side level at the top of the Premier League with United on 81 points with two games to play, will also mean that the two English teams are still under a great deal of pressure to perform on the domestic front.
Points dropped
Meanwhile, Liverpool came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Birmingham City FC. Birmingham had led through Mikael Forsell and Sebastian Larsson only for Peter Crouch and Yossi Benayoun to snatch a draw. In Spain, Barcelona lost 2-0 at RC Deportivo La Coruña, leaving them four points behind Villarreal CF.
